Step 1: Shutdown

Close your applications, save your work, and shut down your computer. Restart to see if the problem has resolved.

Step 2: SMC Reset

The SMC reset controls low level functions of your Mac like the battery, light sensors, and fans.
Read through the steps below and then give it a try:
  1. Shut down the computer and plug in the power adapter.
  2. On the keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the Power button at the same time for less than 2 seconds, then release the keys at the same time. Computer should not turn on. You may see the tiny light change color where your power adaptor plugs into you Mac.
  3. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
  4. SMC for iMac or Mac minis: unplug for 15 seconds. Plug in for 5 seconds, then power on.

Step 3: PRAM Reset

“Parameter random access memory (PRAM) holds information about the configuration of your computer, including things like the date and time, as well as desktop, volume, mouse, and other control settings. It’s powered by a small battery, so these settings don’t get lost every time you turn your computer off.”
Read through the steps below and then give it a try:

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Locate the CommandOptionP, and R keys.
  3. Press the power button.
  4. Before the grey screen appears, press the CommandOptionP, and R keys at the same time.
  5. Hold the keys until your computer restarts and you hear the startup sound a second time.
  6. Release the keys.
